[Review] Charmed Life (Chrestomanci, book 1) (1977) by Diana Wynne Jones

Diana Wynne Jones is such a marvel of a writer. This book is packed with magic and Jones's trademark whimsy, and the setting feels both wonderfully strange and also completely real.

Beneath all the magic and wonder, there is also great subtext wrapped inside powerful character building. This book is an exploration of sibling dynamics, jealousy, and the quiet strength of an unassuming hero. Jones brilliantly dissects the nature of talent vs hard work and how easily we can be deceived by appearances. It's a powerful character study.

A beautiful story that celebrates the extraordinary power found in simply being yourself.
