T. Kingfisher is a master of ambiance, and The Hollow Places held me absolutely spellbound. It takes one of my favorite tropes—a doorway to another world—and uses it to create a truly unsettling and atmospheric horror story.
What makes this novel so effective is its brilliant worldbuilding, specifically how it grounds the supernatural in the real. The story begins in an old, cluttered curiosity shop. We all know those places—inherently sketchy and strange, filled with all manner of gimmicky items that are spilling over into the aisles. This setting choice is genius—it’s not a huge leap to imagine such a place hiding a nefarious doorway to somewhere even worse. Like attracts like.
With its solid characters, a dark and deadly atmosphere, and a plot that feels both engaging and eerily believable, The Hollow Places is a perfect read for anyone who loves a story that can make their skin crawl.
